What is the Academy of Management?
The Academy of Management (the Academy; AOM) is a professional association for scholars dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations.
Since its beginning in 1936, the Academy has evolved from an organization of 10 members to an organization of 15027 members from 91 nations. Today, the Academy’s 21 professional divisions and three interest groups promote excellence in established management disciplines. Five U.S.-based affiliates, the Eastern, Midwest, Southwest, and Western Academies of Management and the Southern Management Association as well as two international affiliates, the Asia and Iberoamerican Academies of Management, promote the exchange of ideas and provide collaborative opportunities for colleagues sharing a geographic area, language, or cultural identity. The Academy of Management continues to support scholarly activity and the exchange of ideas through ourdivisions and interest groups; annual meeting; Academy of Management News; listservs; AOM Online; collaborative activities with affiliated and associated societies; and four journals: the Academy of Management Learning and Education (AMLE), Academy of Management Journal (AMJ), Academy of Management Review (AMR); Academy of Management Executive (AME).
What are the Academy’s mission and future direction?
The Academy’s central mission is to enhance the profession of management by advancing the scholarship of management and enriching the professional development of its members. The Academy is also committed to shaping the future of management research and education.
Adopted by the Board of Governors in April 2001, with substantial input from the membership, the Academy of Management’s Statement of Strategic Direction reexamines the Academy’s mission and direction in light of a decade of substantial growth in membership and interest areas, as well as dramatic changes unfolding in management research and education.
How is the Academy organized, and what are its activities?
The Academy is a member-driven society, overseen by a voluntary Board of Governors with the aid of staff who help to coordinate member activities. Activities are largely organized around divisions and interest groups,committees and task forces, and an advisory council and other grassroots initiatives, in addition to collaborations with affiliated and associated societies.
Members collaborate and exchange expertise in 24 management disciplines represented by divisions and interest groups. Membership in two divisions or interest groups is included in the basic membership rate. Additional divisions and interest groups can be added for a nominal fee. Divisions provide disciplinary “home bases” for members with specific scholarly interests. They function like mini societies by encouraging scholarship, dissemination of information, and fellowship among persons of similar academic and professional interest. There are currently 21 divisions in the Academy governed by their respective memberships in conformance with Academy policies and bylaws. Interest groups are formed around emerging trends in management thought and research, unlike the divisions, which represent established bodies of management knowledge. The research focus of interest groups is in areas where members are beginning to make or are likely to make scholarly contributions, whereas the research focus of divisions is firmly rooted; members are clearly and regularly making scholarly contributions and the body of scholarship has an independent record in scholarly books and journals and in application to the management field. There are currently three interest groups in the Academy.

Affiliated and associated academies, both U.S-based and international, promote the exchange of ideas and provide collaborative opportunities for colleagues.
The Academy offers professional development for its members and services that include: our annual meeting; theAcademy of Management News; listservs; research tools; AOM Online; job placement; recognition programs; and publication of four journals: the Academy of Management Learning and Education (AMLE), Academy of Management Journal (AMJ), Academy of Management Review (AMR); Academy of Management Executive (AME).
As a professional, voluntary association, the Academy of Management strives to create community by building networks that facilitate learning and open exchanges. The people and communities section of AOM Online connects members to each other and to the larger world through directories and links. It offers forums for discussion where virtual communities reside. Divisions and interest groups create a sense of place for those seeking an intellectual home and a means of establishing ties with others in various management disciplines. People and Communities also celebrates members for their volunteerism, their service in leadership capacities, and their professional accomplishments.
The Academy has numerous networks and large numbers of involved people.
Did you know that …
- The Academy hosts 50 listservs connecting nearly 10,000 people. Members host listservs at their institutions linking thousands more.
- Last year, the Academy’s annual meeting brought together 5,538 attendees. 3,866 people were on the program, and 3,769 people served as volunteer reviewers! Hundreds volunteered in other capacities.
- Members belong to at least two divisions and interest groups. Almost half find a home in more than two. This translates to nearly 30,000 connections to division and interest groups.
- As reviewers, editorial staff, special editors, and volunteer boards, approximately 1,500 people contribute their time to the Academy’s journals, interacting with as many as 2,500 authors.
- Across the Academy, more than 60 awards programs recognize members for their service and accomplishments annually.
- There are 873 members listed in the Leadership Directory and an estimated 2,000 more doing volunteer work at any given time! Would you like to volunteer?
