Wolfgang Weber (17 February, 1939 in Mährisch Schönberg; † 1 December, 2019 in Paderborn) was a German business economist. He was Rector of the University of Paderborn from 1995 to 2003.

Life

Wolfgang Weber was a German business economist. He studied economics at the University of Mannheim, graduating in 1968, and then became a research assistant at the same University. After obtaining his doctorate in 1971, he worked as an academic councilor at the University of Mannheim from 1973 to 1976. In 1980, he qualified as a professor of business administration at the University of Mannheim.

In 1976, Wolfgang Weber was appointed as Professor of Business Administration, in particular Organization and Human Resources, at the newly founded Paderborn Comprehensive University. In 1982, he moved to a chair of human resources management at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration and returned to Paderborn in 1985. There he taught business administration with a focus on human resources management until his retirement in 2005.

He was Dean of the Department of Economics at the University of Paderborn from 1978 to 1979 and 1995, and Vice Dean from 1979 to 1981. He was Vice-Rector for Planning and Finance at the University of Paderborn from 1987 to 1991, and a member of the founding committee of the and Faculty of Economics at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 1991-1993. In 1995, he was elected Rector of the University of Paderborn. He led the university after its re-election until 2003. Weber was founding dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Hamburg from 2005 to 2003.

From 1997 to 1999, he chaired the North Rhine-Westphalia State Rectors’ Conference. From 2002 to 2004, he was vice president of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). From 2003 to 2004, Weber was president of the Association of University Teachers of Business Administration e. V. (VHB) and from 2005 to 2006 president of the International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management (IFSAM).

From 1977 to 1994, he was on the air for Telekolleg with courses in “Business Administration” and “Managerial Accounting.” He was one of the founding editors of the Journal of Human Resource Research in 1987.

He was Rector of the University of Paderborn from 1995 to 2003.
