AI Frontiers in Management Research: Embracing Possibilities, Governing Perils

Monday 4 December 2023 14.00-15.30 CET

The introduction of Chat-GPT at the end of 2022 marks the latest milestone in the application of, and discourse about, artificial intelligence (AI) in management research. In the past years, we have seen an increasing number of articles published on the topic, as well as editorials in most of the top journals. The dominant narrative is that AI presents possibilities that we should embrace, while an emerging stream of research adopts a more critical stance and cautions about the risks that AI also entails. How are the perils to be governed, while possibilities are embraced? What role should the different stakeholders play in harnessing the AI frontiers in management research?

The governance of higher education markets in turbulent times: the challenges of corporatization and distance learning

June 20, 2023

The pandemic has accelerated the trend towards corporatization and distance learning in higher education institutions (HEIs). Education in business and management – which accounts for 15/20% of Higher Education students across the globe – has been impacted by both trends; in particular, business schools have been exposed to corporatization. Hence, HEIs that are traditionally governed by a bottom-up approach have been pushed to a top-down organizational model based mostly on financial indicators.

Webinar «East and West: Comparative Perspectives on Business Management»

February 9, 2022

Each country business management style differs and, to a great extent, depends on and reflects the culture of each community, also reflected in the educational system and the political, economic and social context.

The differences in these factors between Europe and Asia are obvious, conditioning the access and exercise of hierarchical authority, leadership and decision-making, company organisation, planning and other aspects of business management in particular and of organisational management in general.

However, both systems have evolved in the last decade, so there are also points of convergence.

In this webinar we will analyse the main characteristics of business management in Asia and Europe, with experts from the academic and business world.

The webinar, co-organized by Casa Asia, IFSAM (International Federation of Scholarly Associations of Management) and ACEDE (Scientific Association of Economics and Business Management) is aimed at European managers with interests in Asia, Asian managers with interests in Europe and academics and students in the field of business management.

The webinar was held in English.

IFSAM webinar series on management research evaluation across the world

Jan – May 2021

Following up the recent Financial Times (FT) survey on management research and publications, IFSAM has launched a webinar series (using zoom) on the topic of management research (quality) evaluation across the world.

The monthly series will comprise 5 webinars: four with a particular focus on a stakeholder group each month from January to April and a final, closing one in May.

As you can see in the webpage through the link above, the first webinar took place on Jan 29 with editors of scientific journals and officers of different associations and organizations, as well as Andrew Jack, the editor of the FT in charge of global higher education, including the FT survey on management research.

The next three webinars to follow are with representatives of three other types of stakeholders in the panel: university presidents and deans which took place on February 24, editors of publishing houses with management journals and books on March 26 and representatives of ministries/research agencies in charge of management research evaluation on April 23. The final, closing one will be on May 20 with representatives from each stakeholder group. At the end of this series in May, we aim the IFSAM Council to issue a position statement.

The main insights for each webinar will be reflected in IFSAM conversation letters, published in our website.
